Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Panel

What are VFDs?

A VFD is a motor controller that can drive an electric motor. It does this by varying the frequency and the voltage it supplies to the motor. By varying the frequency, it directly effects its RPMs. More specifically, the faster (higher) the frequency, the faster the RPMs. A VFD is especially useful in applications where it is not required that an electric motor runs at full speed. These applications will include, but not limited to: compressor motors, evaporative condener fans, and penthouse motors.

VFDs are a great way to save energy since they allow the motors to be ran at what's required for the load. They are also soft-start capable, which means it avoids putting excess stress on the motors during startup. This reduces the sudden change in current & voltage, reducing energy cost and maintenance time!

Manufacturer

ICS provides the option using Allen-Bradley Power Flex Series VFDs, the Danfoss Automation VT Drives (VLT), or other solutions. Depending on your business' preference, ICS integrates the application to your need, whether it be the manufacturer, horse power (HP), voltage, or enegy requirements. ICS ensures your motors will be properly protected from overload, short circuit, and high current.

Configurable Options

These VFD panels can come with a variety of options. Depending on the application, they can be configured for one or multiple VFDs, outdoor or indoor panel types (NEMA 3, 3R, 12 + more), a flange mount or side mount disconnect, a heater for outdoor panels, motor overload protection, and control for multiple motors. We also can provide bypass circuits for a manual motor protector.

Notable Considerations

When installing VFDs, there are some things to consider. The cable that supplies voltage to your VFD needs to be properly selected to ensure your VFD and associated wires are properly safe. VFDs can emit high frequency current spikes, that over time can wear down the insulation of your wire causing damage to the motor and VFD. This in turn, has very negative effects on nearby wires. By using VFD cable, it has 3 balanced grouds and copper tape shield to provide low impedance for return current. This means it provides the proper current pathways in the motor to be non-damaging. This VFD cable address premature cable failue, stray current, cross-talk, and improves reliability of VFDs. This will reduce the risk of downtime and repair.
